Detailed Application of 17-4PH Material in Server Equipment

17-4PH (UNS S17400, GB standard 0Cr17Ni4Cu4Nb) is a martensitic precipitation hardening stainless steel. Featuring high strength, excellent structural stability and superior corrosion resistance, it has become the preferred material for core precision parts of server equipment, meeting the stringent operating requirements of servers for high load, high density and long service life.

Its main chemical composition includes 15.5-17.5% chromium, 3.0-5.0% nickel, 3.0-5.0% copper and 0.15-0.45% niobium. Chromium provides basic corrosion resistance; copper precipitates nano-reinforced phases after aging treatment; niobium refines grains and inhibits intergranular corrosion. The low carbon content (≤0.07%) avoids embrittlement risks during processing and welding. After solution treatment at 1020-1060℃ followed by H900 aging heat treatment, the material achieves a tensile strength of 1310-1450MPa, yield strength ≥1180MPa and hardness of HRC 40-45. Its strength is 3 to 4 times that of 304 stainless steel, enabling an optimal balance of lightweight design and high load-bearing capacity.

In server equipment, 17-4PH is mainly applied to key components such as precision elastic elements, connector terminals, structural fasteners, heat dissipation assemblies and slide rail parts. Servers operate long-term in an environment with high vibration and slight micro-corrosion caused by computer room moisture and dust. With corrosion resistance close to 304 stainless steel, 17-4PH can resist mild corrosion in server rooms and prevent component failure due to rusting. Its heat treatment deformation is controlled within ≤0.1%, delivering outstanding dimensional stability. It ensures the resilience accuracy of precision elastic parts and plugging stability of connectors, thus guaranteeing reliable signal transmission.

In addition, 17-4PH boasts good machinability. In the solution-treated state (HRC 25-32), it is suitable for CNC precision machining, and can reach high hardness after aging, satisfying the demand for precision forming plus high-strength service of server parts. It maintains stable performance without obvious degradation under long-term service below 300℃, adapting to the continuous high-temperature environment generated by high power consumption of servers. This extends equipment service life and reduces maintenance costs. Compared with ordinary stainless steel, 17-4PH strikes an excellent balance of strength, corrosion resistance and machinability, making it a cost-effective high-end material choice for server precision structural parts.
