High‑precision MIM Process | Preferred Manufacturing Solution for New‑energy, 3C and Medical Precision Components

Competition in the precision‑manufacturing sector is shifting toward micron‑level dimensional control. The three major tracks — new energy, 3C electronics and medical equipment — impose stringent requirements on small metal components in terms of precision, surface quality and batch‑to‑batch consistency. The high‑precision MIM (Metal Injection Molding) process has emerged as a preferred manufacturing solution for these industries.

The core strength of high‑precision MIM lies in stable dimensional control. After sintering, conventional dimensional accuracy reaches ±0.3 %~±0.5 %, and even higher accuracy can be achieved under optimized conditions. Parts exhibit good surface roughness, which minimizes secondary finishing operations such as polishing and grinding. In contrast to die casting and forging, MIM can form thin‑wall and micro features: the minimum wall thickness can reach 0.3 %. Tiny holes, fine tooth profiles and complex curved surfaces are formed in one step without subsequent milling or drilling.

A large number of MIM‑manufactured precision components are adopted in the new‑energy industry. Micro metal structural parts inside new‑energy batteries, electric control units and connectors must withstand high pressure and corrosion, maintain stable dimensions and resist deformation under long‑term vibration. MIM can mass‑produce such lightweight, high‑strength components, enabling downsizing of new‑energy assemblies and higher energy density while meeting the industry’s demand for mass‑production cost reduction.

3C electronic products keep trending toward thinning and miniaturization, where internal space is extremely limited. Various fasteners, hinge shafts, shielding structures and connector parts have complex geometries. Traditional machining suffers from high unit cost and slow mass‑delivery cycles. MIM enables mass injection molding; a single mold ensures minimal dimensional deviation across tens of thousands of parts, satisfying mass‑production requirements for micro metal components in mobile phones, wearable devices and notebooks.

The medical sector sets extremely high standards for material biocompatibility and part cleanliness. MIM can process medical‑grade 316L and titanium alloys to produce surgical‑instrument accessories and implant‑assisting components. MIM‑produced parts are free of machining burrs and reduce impurity residues caused by polishing, complying with strict quality‑inspection standards for medical devices.

MIM offers flexible material options. Its mechanical properties approach those of forgings and far exceed those of conventional press‑and‑sinter powder‑metallurgy parts. During new‑product development, rapid mold opening supports small‑batch sample validation. After structure and performance verification, production can quickly scale up to mass output, shortening time‑to‑market.

It should be noted that MIM is intended for small‑to‑medium‑sized precision parts. To maximize its precision advantages and lower defect rates, designers need to take MIM forming characteristics into account in the early‑stage product design and optimize wall thickness, fillets and demolding structures.

Amid the localization drive for precision components, iterative improvements in high‑precision MIM deliver stable, highly consistent manufacturing solutions for new‑energy, 3C and medical sectors, helping enterprises balance product performance and mass‑production costs.
